Comenius University in Bratislava

When someone says “Slovak university,” many people first think of Comenius University (UK). This university was founded in 1919, shortly after the creation of Czechoslovakia, and represents the oldest and largest Slovak university. UK is home to 13 faculties, covering a wide range of fields from medicine and law to natural sciences.

Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava

The Slovak University of Technology (STU) can be considered the cradle of many innovations in Slovakia. It was founded in 1937 as the Slovak Technical University. STU consists of seven faculties, with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology considered the heart of the university. The university also includes the STU University Technology Incubator (InQb), which helps students and graduates develop business ideas and supports them in establishing their own companies (startups).

Technical University of Košice

Moving to eastern Slovakia, we find another significant institution in Slovak higher education—the Technical University of Košice (TUKE). It was established in 1952 and currently has 9 faculties, including the Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Aviation, Management, and Geotechnologies. Interestingly, TUKE is currently building a new Slovak supercomputer with the ambition of ranking in the top ten of the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers, the “Green 500.”

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice

If TUKE is the technical beacon of the east, then Pavol Jozef Šafárik University (UPJŠ) is its cultural and scientific heart. Since 1959, it has borne the name of the prominent Slovak poet, historian, and ethnographer. UPJŠ boasts five faculties. Key development projects include the establishment and successful operation of university science parks UVP Medipark, UVP Technicom, and the Promatech science and research center.

University of Economics in Bratislava

Returning to the capital city, we find the University of Economics in Bratislava (EUBA), founded in 1940. Here, future economists, managers, and entrepreneurs are trained, who will shape Slovakia’s economic future. EUBA consists of seven faculties. Among its recent successes is the acquisition of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan for projects aimed at strengthening its scientific research capacity and contributing to the modernization of educational programs and infrastructure.
